Practicum - Teaching Practice

This module is intended for those who need to have teaching experience. You can choose whether or not to take the teaching practice module. We advise you to take this module since it is a very important aspect of teaching a language. However, there are many teachers who already have experience and others who are planning to teach abroad and teaching practice or experience is not required by their future employers.

100-hour TESOL Graduates:

The 100-hour online TESOL course prepares trainees to create professional lesson plans, so graduates from this program who wish to obtain valuable teaching experience are eligible to take the same 20-hour Practicum module offered for Trinity CertTESOL*, TESL Canada Professional Standard 1* , and TESL Canada Professional Standard 2** certification.

The Practicum can be completed at any ESL school or TESOL/TEFL center in the world. Most graduates of the 100-hour TESOL course wait until they start working to complete the supervised teaching practice module because teaching experience is rarely required to obtain a job abroad and a qualified colleague may offer to supervise the Practicum free of charge. Graduates who wish to obtain teaching experience before starting work are responsible for finding their own center. In either case, Ontesol will provide the guidelines for the Practicum, moderate the reports, and issue the 20-hour Practicum certificate with transcript. A $ 100 fee applies for this service. There is a $ 350 fee for graduates who wish to take the Practicum at Coventry House International in Toronto.

*Coventry House International's 5-week TESOL course is recognized by Trinity CertTESOL and TESL Canada Professional Standard 1.

**Ontesol's 250-hour online TESOL course is recognized by TESL Canada Professional Standard 2 upon completion of the 20-hour Practicum.

250-hour TESOL Graduates:

TESL Canada practicum requirements:

If you are planning to apply to TESL Canada to obtain the National Professional Certification Standards For Instructors Of English As A Second Or Foreign Language In Adult Programs (Standard 2), you must complete the practicum portion of the course. We advise you to check their website for updated requirements. (www.tesl.ca)

Their current requirements for the practicum module are:

  • 10 hours of class observation and 10 hours of teaching practice with adult ESL students of different levels.
  • You will have to submit a lesson plan for each class and a self-assessment sheet. Your supervising tutor will provide you with the material for each lesson as well as guidance.

You can complete this module at any TESL Canada course provider that provides the Stand-Alone Practicum (A fee applies), at any ESL school -public or private- in the world, or at a volunteer center that offers ESL classes.

Ontesol encourages graduates to complete the Practicum at an ESL school or volunteer center. 95% of our graduates take the Practicum for free:

Those who are teaching in Canada: Your ESL school requested that you obtain TESL Canada's certification, so your employer will help you with the Practicum.

Those who are seeking employment in Canada: You can obtain a temporary contract with the 250-hour online Diploma under the condition that you obtain TESL Canada's certification in the near future, so your employer will help you with the Practicum before you gain full-time employment status.

Those who are teaching abroad or will travel abroad: There isn't a deadline to take the Practicum after completing the 250-hour online course, so you may take the Practicum at any ESL school in the world with the help of a qualified supervisor before returning to Canada.

Ontesol's Director of Studies must confirm that the Practicum you complete at another school meets TESL Canada’s requirements (even if it is completed at a recognized TESL Canada course provider), as it is Ontesol which will accord you with the Practicum certificate and transcript. Please do not arrange the Practicum without the approval of Ontesol's Director of Studies, as TESL Canada may require you to re-do the module if they deem that not all required administrative and academic procedures were followed correctly.

Upon approval of the supervisor, Ontesol will provide the guidelines, moderate the Practicum reports and lesson plans, and issue the Practicum certificate free of charge.

Stand-Alone Practicum at Coventry House International in Toronto: Contact for fee and availability. For a list of TESL Canada course providers in different provinces, please check TESL Canada's website  tesl.ca.
